# B2B Search Traffic Study 2026: Collapsed Companies Fell 41% Behind Their Search Peers

## What did the 2026 B2B search traffic study find?

**Since early 2024, B2B companies flagged as collapsed have fallen 41% behind the other domains that rank for the same buyer questions.** We indexed every domain to its own January to March 2024 average. In September 2026 the median flagged company stood at 0.45 of that baseline, the median of the field at 0.76. That is the core result of our study of 4,403 flagged B2B domains and 4,449 unflagged domains found in the US Google results for the same buyer-intent queries, measured monthly from January 2023 to September 2026.

The second result corrects a number we published ourselves. Measured against their own peak since January 2023, the flagged companies are down a median of 77%. But the field fell too: **57% of the unflagged domains ranking for the same queries (3,021 of 5,344) now sit 45% or more below their own peak**. A peak-to-today drop alone cannot separate what happened to one company from shared market movements or changes in the estimation model. The comparison against the field holds up better, and it is the one this study is built around.

The third result concerns the answer layer above the results. [Google AI Overviews](https://peppereffect.com/blog/google-ai-overviews) appeared on 97.5% of the 1,560 buyer-intent queries we pulled on 1 October 2026. Ranking entries from flagged companies had their domain cited in that AI Overview 23.1% of the time, entries from stable peers 26.1%.

**What you will learn:**

- How far flagged B2B companies fell behind the domains they compete with in search, by category
- When the gap opened, and why the timing cannot pin it on AI Overviews
- How often AI Overviews appear on B2B buyer queries and how often ranking companies get cited
- How often ChatGPT names flagged companies for their own category question
- What a B2B marketing team can monitor, and where this data stops

Key Takeaway

A company's decline from its own peak does not show how it performed against other domains. We compare it with the domains that rank for the same buyer questions. On that basis, flagged B2B companies have fallen **41% behind the field since Q1 2024**, and when they still rank, the AI Overview above the results lists their domain in fewer than one case in four.

![B2B marketing team comparing two printed traffic charts, one flat and one falling, to understand their organic search traffic gap against competitors](https://peppereffect.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/images/b2b-traffic-study-2026-body-1.webp?width=1200&height=675&name=b2b-traffic-study-2026-body-1.webp)

## How much organic traffic did collapsed B2B companies really lose?

**Indexed to the first quarter of 2024, the median flagged company stood at 0.45 in September 2026, the median of the field at 0.76.** Both lines moved almost in parallel until December 2025 (0.87 and 0.88). During 2026 both declined, the flagged group much more steeply, and the gap reached 41% by September.

The chart also shows something we did not expect. Between July and December 2024 the flagged index rose 34% and the field index 24%, and both fell back in early 2025. That shared swing points to a market-wide or model-wide effect rather than anything a single website did. It also makes peak-based drop figures depend heavily on the observation window: if a domain's peak sits on that bulge, its drop looks larger. We covered the click side of this pattern in [impressions up, clicks down](https://peppereffect.com/blog/impressions-up-clicks-down).

![Line chart of median estimated organic traffic for 4,403 flagged B2B companies versus 4,449 field domains, indexed to Q1 2024, January 2023 to September 2026](https://peppereffect.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/images/b2b-traffic-study-2026-chart-field-index.webp?width=1200&height=675&name=b2b-traffic-study-2026-chart-field-index.webp)

Measured company by company, **60% of the flagged group (2,651 of 4,403) fell below 70% of the field's index for at least three consecutive months.** The other 1,752 did not cross that threshold, which does not mean they kept pace: some trail the field by less than 30%, some only dipped for one or two months. In September 2026, 44% of the flagged group sat below half the field's index.

Source: peppereffect B2B Search Study 2026. Position vs. field = the median flagged company's traffic index divided by the overall field median index, both indexed to Q1 2024 (1.00 = moved with the field). All categories are compared with the same overall field, not with category-specific peer groups. The company count applies to the traffic index only; AI Overview rates use each category's query sample and ChatGPT rates the separately measured subset shown in brackets. Two small test groups (manufacturing and professional services) are excluded from this table but included in the totals. Traffic estimates from [DataForSEO historical bulk traffic estimation](https://docs.dataforseo.com/v3/dataforseo_labs/google/historical_bulk_traffic_estimation/live/), US.

Flagged sales tech and ops tech companies now run at half the field's index. Legal tech holds up best at 0.71. Across the 17 core categories, the median position ranges from 0.50 to 0.71, so each category's median sits roughly 29% to 50% behind the overall field median.

## Is the collapse caused by AI Overviews?

![Software company founder reviewing falling organic search traffic on a laptop, trying to separate AI Overview impact from Google core updates](https://peppereffect.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/images/b2b-traffic-study-2026-float.webp?width=1200&height=675&name=b2b-traffic-study-2026-float.webp)

**This data cannot answer that, and the timing shows why.** Google began rolling out AI Overviews to US users on [14 May 2024](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/). On 5 March 2025 it [announced](https://blog.google/products/search/ai-mode-search/) expanded AI Overviews and an early AI Mode experiment in Search Labs. Google ran broad core updates in the same windows: the [Search Status Dashboard](https://status.search.google.com/products/rGHU1u87FJnkP6W2GwMi/history) lists core updates starting 5 March 2024 (completed 19 April), 15 August 2024, 11 November 2024 and 13 March 2025. Demand shifts, new competitors and changes in the traffic model are further explanations we cannot rule out.

We dated the month each flagged company first fell behind: the first month in which its traffic index fell below 70% of the field's index and stayed there for the next two months. The onsets do not cluster on one event. They spread across 2024, 2025 and 2026.

![Bar chart showing the quarter in which 2,651 flagged B2B companies first fell behind the field in organic search, Q1 2024 to Q3 2026](https://peppereffect.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/images/b2b-traffic-study-2026-chart-onset-quarter-v2.webp?width=1200&height=675&name=b2b-traffic-study-2026-chart-onset-quarter-v2.webp)

| Quarter the gap opened | Companies | Share of detected onsets | What else happened in Google Search |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Q1 2024 | 79 | 3.0% | March 2024 core update (from 5 March) |

Avoid This Mistake

Do not diagnose your own drop from a peak-to-today number. Compare your trend with the domains that rank beside you for the same queries, using the same data source for everyone. If they fell as far as you did, the cause is probably not specific to your site. If you fell further, investigate the difference: relative underperformance tells you where to look, not what caused it. Our [5-minute self-diagnosis](https://peppereffect.com/blog/is-ai-eating-your-traffic) walks through the first check.

The click side is better documented than the cause. [Ahrefs](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overviews-reduce-clicks-update/) compared desktop Search Console data for 300,000 keywords from December 2023 and December 2025 and estimated that an AI Overview lowers the click-through rate of the position-one result by about 58%. [SparkToro](https://sparktoro.com/blog/in-2026-less-than-one-third-of-google-searches-still-send-a-click/), using Similarweb's US panel for January to April 2026, found that 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click. Both are external studies of broad query sets, not measurements of our B2B sample.

## How often do AI Overviews appear on B2B buyer queries?

**On 97.5% of the queries in our sample.** We pulled US Google desktop results in English for 1,564 buyer-intent queries such as "best contract management software for small businesses" on 1 October 2026. 1,560 returned usable results, and 1,521 of those returned an AI Overview (collected with asynchronous AI Overview loading enabled). In the 17 core B2B categories the rate ranged from 95.9% (proptech) to 100% (sales tech, IT, insurtech, legal tech, construction tech). This is one snapshot of selected buyer queries, not a representative sample of all B2B searches.

That is far above the rates published for general query sets. Query selection, collection date and settings all play a part, and so does query type. [Semrush](https://www.semrush.com/blog/semrush-ai-overviews-study/) reports that the informational share of queries triggering AI Overviews fell from 91.3% in January 2025 to 57.1% in October 2025, as commercial and transactional AI Overviews grew. In our sample, the results for "best X for Y" queries of the kind that shape a B2B shortlist almost always included an AI Overview. [Pew Research Center](https://www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/2025/05/23/what-web-browsing-data-tells-us-about-how-ai-appears-online/) found that 58% of US adults in its March 2025 browsing panel ran at least one search that produced an AI summary.

## Does ranking in the top 20 get you cited in AI Overviews?

**Not reliably. On queries with an AI Overview, 23.1% of the ranking entries from flagged companies (1,373 of 5,955) had their domain listed among that AI Overview's sources. For stable peers the rate was 26.1% (1,114 of 4,266).** The median position on the results page was 13 for flagged companies and 11 for stable peers.

[seoClarity](https://www.seoclarity.net/research/ai-overviews-impact) found in a 432,000-keyword analysis that 97% of AI Overviews cite at least one source from the top 20 organic results. So AI Overviews usually draw on some ranking pages, yet among the flagged-company and stable-peer entries on queries with an AI Overview, about three in four belonged to domains that were not among its sources. [Seer Interactive](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/ctr-aio) measured organic CTR on informational AI Overview queries falling from 1.41% to 0.64% between January 2024 and January 2025, and 1.02% instead of 0.74% when the client's brand appeared in the AI Overview. Seer notes that branded queries with a higher base CTR may explain part of that difference.

| Group | Organic ranking entries on AI Overview queries | Entries whose domain was among the AIO sources | Domain citation rate |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Flagged companies | 5,955 | 1,373 | 23.1% |
| Stable peers (traffic down less than 30% from peak) | 4,266 | 1,114 | 26.1% |
| Other field domains down 45% or more from peak | 5,846 | 1,255 | 21.5% |

Sources: peppereffect B2B Search Study 2026, US Google desktop results (about 20 organic results per query) for 1,560 queries, 1 October 2026. Counts are ranking entries, not unique companies; an entry counts as cited when any page of its domain appears among the AI Overview's sources. [seoClarity AI Overviews research](https://www.seoclarity.net/research/ai-overviews-impact).

This study did not measure which page characteristics lead to a citation. Google states that pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link in its [AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). Our working view on selection logic, which is practice rather than a finding of this study, is in [how LLMs decide what to cite](https://peppereffect.com/blog/how-llms-decide-what-to-cite).

Key Takeaway

A top-20 ranking is no assurance of a citation. **About three in four ranking entries from flagged companies and stable peers belonged to domains the AI Overview did not list as a source**, on queries where an AI Overview appeared.

## Does ChatGPT name the companies that lost traffic?

**In 22.2% of the cases we measured.** For 2,808 of the flagged companies (53% of the 5,310 flagged in total) we have one recorded ChatGPT answer to their own category question, for example "best leasing software for property managers with multiple units". 624 were named in the answer. 2,184, or 77.8%, were not.

Across the 17 core categories, the naming rate ranges from 18.4% in ops tech to 29.8% in vertical SaaS (see the table above); including the two small test groups, the low end is 7.6%. The measured subset was not drawn at random, and we did not measure stable peers the same way, so this does not show that losing search traffic predicts ChatGPT visibility. It does show that 2,184 of the 2,808 measured companies were absent from their single recorded answer to their own category question. We track this as [Share of Model](https://peppereffect.com/blog/share-of-model), the share of relevant AI answers that name a brand.

## What should a B2B marketing team do with this data?

**Stop measuring against your own peak and start measuring against the domains that compete for the same answers.** The steps below are monitoring practices we recommend, not interventions this study tested. A historical peer comparison needs one consistent third-party traffic estimate for every domain, your own included. The full 90-day version is in our [AI search operating plan](https://peppereffect.com/blog/ai-search-optimization-plan).

1

Build your field

Take the buyer-intent queries you need to win (we suggest 20 to 50) and list every domain that ranks in the top 20 for them. That list is your peer set, not your competitor slide.

2

Index everyone to the same baseline

Compare estimates from the same provider, for the same country and the same baseline quarter, for your domain and the field. Look at your own Search Console data separately; do not mix measured clicks with modelled estimates. In this study we used "below 70% of the field for three consecutive months" as a descriptive threshold, not a validated diagnostic test.

3

Check citations, not only rankings

For each query, record whether an AI Overview appears and whether it cites you. Search Console's generative AI report now shows impressions for AI features. Then ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity the same question and log who gets named.

4

Test changes on a defined set of pages

Start with pages that rank in the top 20 but are not cited. Change one set of pages at a time (for example a direct answer first, specific numbers with named sources) and measure rankings, citations and leads over repeated observations. Treat each change as a hypothesis to test. Our [citation quality standard](https://peppereffect.com/blog/citation-quality-standard) lists the checks we run before publishing.

For a worked example of what a sustained answer-first program did for one site, see the [Helium42 case study](https://peppereffect.com/case-study-helium42), including its limits.

## How was the study conducted?

![Laptop showing a stable green field line and a declining navy line, illustrating collapsed B2B domains measured against their ranking peers](https://peppereffect.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/images/b2b-traffic-study-2026-float-right.webp?width=1200&height=675&name=b2b-traffic-study-2026-float-right.webp)

**Flagged group.** 5,310 B2B domains that our [traffic collapse monitoring](https://peppereffect.com/blog/traffic-collapse-ai-search) had flagged as collapsed and verified as live, across 19 category groups. Each was re-measured with monthly US organic traffic estimates from January 2023 to September 2026.

**Field and stable peers.** Every other domain in the US Google top 20 for the same 1,564 buyer-intent queries on 1 October 2026, after removing a blocklist of about 65 review portals, forums, video platforms and large publishers (other non-vendor sites can remain): 7,380 domains. The stable peers are the 1,735 field domains whose latest three-month average was less than 30% below their highest three-month average.

**Traffic index.** For the index comparison, a domain needed estimates for January, February and March 2024 averaging at least 300 visits a month: 4,403 flagged and 4,449 field domains qualified. Each monthly estimate is divided by the domain's Q1 2024 average; each line is the monthly median. A company's position against the field is its index divided by the field median for that month. In the raw data, the median domain's November 2024 value sits about 60% below the average of its October and December values, in both groups, and at least three in four domains show the dip. We treat that as a source data error and replace November 2024 with the average of October and December for every domain.

**Peak-based figures.** The peak comparisons use a separate rule: at least 12 monthly values, at least four of them above zero, and a highest three-month average of at least 1,000 visits. That yields 4,938 flagged domains (the same 4,938 qualify without the non-zero condition) and 5,344 field domains. Both compare the latest three-month average with the highest three-month average since January 2023.

**AI answers.** AI Overview presence and sources come from the same US Google desktop result pages, collected through the DataForSEO SERP API. ChatGPT naming comes from one recorded answer per measured company to its category question.

Limits we want you to know

The flagged group was selected because it had already declined, and the stable peers were selected because they had not. Neither is a random or matched control group, so selection on decline and regression to the mean limit what the comparison can show. Traffic figures are DataForSEO modelled estimates, not Search Console or analytics data, and we have not validated them against the sampled domains' own analytics. Comparing indices against the same field can reduce shared measurement effects, but it does not remove errors that differ by domain, category or month, and we cannot tell whether the model captures click losses caused by AI Overviews. For scale: [Ahrefs' 2022 comparison](https://ahrefs.com/blog/traffic-estimations-accuracy/) of 1,635 sites found a median deviation from Search Console of 49.52% for its own estimates and 68.36% for Semrush; that is not a measure of DataForSEO's error. AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers vary from one request to the next, and each was measured once. The data covers the US only and shows association, not cause.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is SEO dead in 2026?

No, but rankings and AI citations are now two separate measures of visibility. seoClarity found that 97% of AI Overviews cite at least one top-20 result, so ranking pages still feed the answer. But in our sample an AI Overview appeared on 97.5% of B2B buyer queries, and, on queries with an AI Overview, about three in four ranking entries from flagged companies and stable peers belonged to domains it did not cite. A top-20 ranking is neither a requirement nor a guarantee for a citation, and SEO reporting that stops at rankings misses that layer. We cover what changed in [is SEO dead](https://peppereffect.com/blog/is-seo-dead), and how the two disciplines differ in [AEO vs SEO](https://peppereffect.com/blog/aeo-vs-seo).

### What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search ends without a click on any result: the searcher reads the answer on the results page, refines the query or leaves. SparkToro reported that 68.01% of Google searches in Similarweb's US desktop and mobile browser panel ended without a click in January to April 2026. The remaining searches include clicks on ads and Google's own properties as well as on other websites, and the panel excludes the Google mobile app. If a buyer gets the answer on the results page, a ranking link may never be seen.

### When did Google AI Overviews start?

Google began rolling out AI Overviews to users across the US on 14 May 2024, after a year of testing as the Search Generative Experience. On 5 March 2025 it announced expanded AI Overviews and an early AI Mode experiment in Search Labs. In our data, 16.8% of the detected onsets fell in Q2 2024 and 14.4% in Q1 2025. Both quarters also contained Google core updates, so the timing does not establish a cause.

### How do you rank in AI Overviews?

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews; there is no extra technical requirement. Google describes broad mechanisms such as query fan-out, but does not disclose its full source-selection logic, and this study did not test which page characteristics predict inclusion. What we can say from the data: ranking alone is not enough, because, on queries with an AI Overview, about three in four organic ranking entries from flagged companies and stable peers belonged to domains that were not cited. In practice we start with a direct answer under a question-style heading and specific, sourced numbers, and measure whether citations follow. Our guide to [Google AI Overviews](https://peppereffect.com/blog/google-ai-overviews) explains the mechanics.

### How do you track traffic from AI Overviews?

Search Console's generative AI performance report, available worldwide since the end of August 2026, shows impressions for AI features including AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not report AI Overview clicks separately, and the main performance report counts them within regular search clicks. Use the AI impressions alongside your overall search data and repeated checks of whether your target queries show an AI Overview that cites you. Falling clicks with stable impressions can have several causes. For chat assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, segment referral traffic in your analytics, knowing that it is incomplete. Our [AI visibility benchmarks](https://peppereffect.com/blog/ai-visibility-benchmarks) show typical values by category.

### Is my traffic drop caused by AI Overviews?

Neither your own numbers nor ours can settle that. In our study the field also lost traffic after late 2024, and AI Overview rollouts overlapped with core updates. Compare your estimated trend with the domains that rank beside you, using one data source for all of them, and review your own Search Console clicks, impressions, rankings and site changes separately. Falling behind the field while AI Overviews cite others tells you where to look, not what caused it. Our [self-diagnosis](https://peppereffect.com/blog/is-ai-eating-your-traffic) takes five minutes.
